The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls for calm and political tolerance across Ekurhuleni, as the election campaign enters its final days. A deeply concerning series of killings and the emergence of possible political links to the latest violence in Katlehong, are an example of chaos that cannot be allowed to take over.

A shooting in Katlehong on Tuesday led to the loss of four lives, with some of the victims identified as ANC Youth League members. The attack followed a memorial service for ANC leader Jeanette Magugu, who was herself recently murdered.

There have also been reports alleging links between the suspect and Afrika Mayibuye Party.

I call on the Political Killings Task Team to move with urgency to establish the motive behind these killings, investigate any political links, identify anyone who may have planned or facilitated the violence, and ensure that those responsible face justice.

No political disagreement is worth a single life lost. Bullets can never be allowed to settle political differences.

With 19 days to go before the 04 November election, I urge every political party, candidate and supporter to lower the temperature. Everyone must be able to campaign freely, in our beautiful City of Ekurhuleni.

That is fundamental to a functioning democracy and to ensuring a free and fair election. We cannot let chaos and violence win.

After a term marked by chaos, political instability, corruption and maladministration – Ekurhuleni needs to start service delivery, not more chaos.

On 4 November, voters are offered a clear choice: More chaos or service delivery for all.

Our message to all political parties is simple: There is no place for violence, intimidation or the killing of others in our democracy. Let voters decide, put the guns down.
