The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes the resignation of City Power CEO, Tshifularo Mashava, after a decade with the entity.

While leadership transitions can be necessary, this development comes after years of deteriorating performance at City Power, characterised by prolonged outages, infrastructure failures, cable theft, financial instability, and declining service delivery that has left residents and businesses suffering.

Mashava, who served four years as CEO, will step down at the end of March to pursue other professional interests.

Johannesburg cannot afford uncertainty at the helm of one of its most critical utilities. City Power is central to economic activity, public safety, and basic service delivery. Yet under the current administration, the entity has struggled to maintain reliable electricity supply and protect infrastructure.

The DA therefore demands urgent clarity from the City of Johannesburg on:

• Who will serve as the interim CEO;

• The process and timeline for appointing a permanent replacement; and

• The criteria that will be used to ensure a competent, independent, and corruption-free appointment.

Residents deserve assurance that City Power will not drift into further dysfunction.

This moment must be used to appoint a capable professional with a proven track record in energy management, governance, and infrastructure turnaround, not a politically connected deployment.

Johannesburg’s electricity crisis requires decisive leadership, transparency, and accountability.

The DA will continue to monitor developments closely and will hold the City accountable to ensure that City Power serves residents.
