The Democratic Alliance (DA) is aware of ongoing digging activity at a kraal in the Gugulethu area of Payneville following rumours of a gold discovery.
We call on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to act swiftly and decisively to secure the area alongside the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), and assist them to maintain public order, and prevent this situation from developing into an illegal mining hotbed.
There has been no confirmation from any geological or regulatory authority that the area contains commercially viable gold deposits. Despite this, unregulated digging continues, exposing residents to significant dangers including unstable ground, possible contamination from hazardous materials, damage to private property and livestock, and escalating public safety risks due to large crowds.
Gauteng has already witnessed the devastating consequences of informal and illegal mining. We cannot allow Payneville or Springs to become the next tragic example.
Proactive law enforcement is essential to protect lives and property.
We are also deeply concerned by reports that individuals may be charging residents to dig or remove soil. Any form of financial exploitation must be investigated, and affected residents are urged to open criminal cases with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Should any legitimate mineral deposits exist, these must be assessed and managed strictly through lawful processes in accordance with South African mining and environmental legislation.
This incident once again highlights the failure of the ANC/EFF coalition in Ekurhuleni, whose continued neglect of Springs has left communities vulnerable, unemployed, and susceptible to false hope.
Residents deserve reliable service delivery, safety, and an environment that attracts real investment and creates sustainable jobs.
The DA will continue to fight for accountable governance, safer communities, and genuine economic opportunities for the people of Springs.
