Lesedi Speaker blocks accountability as service delivery crumbles

• Lesedi’s Speaker again delays the motion of no confidence.

• Water failures and sewage pollution demand urgent action.

• The DA’s plan links reliable services to investment and job creation.

The DA condemns the Speaker of Lesedi Local Municipality for once again blocking our Motion of No Confidence (MONC) against Executive Mayor Mluleki Nkosi.

The DA Caucus in Lesedi filed the motion on 9 July 2026, after violent service delivery protests in which lives were lost.

Those protests did not happen out of nowhere, as Lesedi has suffered water failures for years.

In July, Rand Water throttled supply to the municipality, and once again most residents were left with dry taps.

This crisis was entirely preventable. A municipality that pays its bills, maintains its infrastructure, and manages its finances properly does not get throttled. Lesedi’s residents are paying the price for an ANC administration that cannot run the basics.

Instead of facing accountability, the Mayor has been protected. The Speaker failed to table the motion in July. At the Council sitting on 30 September, the Speaker failed again, and Council agreed to delay the motion by another 15 days. This is a disgrace. Every day of delay is another day the people of Lesedi go without the services they pay for.

The failures do not stop at water. On 1 September 2026, the Vaal Orange Catchment Management Agency issued a formal enforcement directive against Lesedi for discharging untreated sewage into the Blesbok Spruit. This is a municipality in collapse.

If elected to govern Lesedi, I will implement our 2026 Manifesto by prioritizing repairs to aging pipes, fixing leaks, and upgrading wastewater systems. We will reinvest water and sanitation revenue to maintain and improve infrastructure, restore reliable services, and tackle sewage pollution.

By restoring reliable water and sanitation services, we will help local businesses grow, attract new investment, and create jobs for Lesedi residents.

The DA will continue to demand that this motion be tabled and that Mayor Nkosi be held accountable for the failures that have left Lesedi residents without reliable basic services.
