- A commuter’s vehicle was stripped of engine parts at the Wonderboom A Re Yeng park-and-ride facility.
- Inspections found the facility unguarded despite public transport grant funding for operations.
- The unfinished intermodal facility raises concerns about commuter safety and the protection of City assets.
The Action SA and ANC Coalition have failed to protect City assets that are funded through the Public Transport Grant for Operations.
A commuter’s vehicle was stripped of its engine parts at the Wonderboom intermodal facility while they used the City’s Areyeng park-and-ride facility.
Even more concerning is that public transport grant funding is used for operations, yet assets are not being protected.
During inspections over the weekend and on Monday, 5 October, the facility stood unguarded while commuters waited to board the bus. Buses were operating at the station without any guarding from criminal elements.
This is also because the intermodal facility, which is supposed to reduce taxis in the City Center and connect PRASA commuters to the bus, is still unfinished and unopened.
If elected to govern, the DA will address safety at A Re Yeng facilities in line with our Manifesto 2026, which commits to promoting collaboration among SAPS, municipal police, and the private security industry, and investing in smart policing and up-to-date technology. We will apply these commitments through coordinated patrols and CCTV monitoring at vulnerable transport facilities to protect commuters and City assets.
Safe, reliable public transport will help connect residents to jobs and interviews, while enabling businesses to grow and create employment by ensuring workers can reach their workplaces.
This shows a lack of political will to address service operations, leaving the City at Risk of Areyeng stations looking like abandoned buildings and becoming a hub for vagrants to sleep in.
