The DA notes the Supreme Court of Appeal’s judgment, which paves the way for the eviction of occupants of the Malgasidik building.
We are not opposed to the eviction, but the tented camp arranged at the corner of Johann Heyns and Nico Smith in Gezina is not suitable as alternative accommodation.
The case we made to the court when we intervened in the matter was that the tented camp would simply become another informal settlement without basic water and sanitation amenities.
The City should not seek to convert existing community amenities used for sports and recreation into a resettlement camp.
Our concern remains that very little thought or planning has gone into the execution of the eviction, particularly regarding where the illegal occupants, many of whom have severe drug dependencies, will be moved.
We have now exhausted our legal options in this matter, and it is clear that the City intends to proceed with the resettlement to the designated camp.
I have written to Tshwane City Manager Johann Mettler to request an indication of how the City intends to proceed and what measures will be put in place to prevent temporary accommodation from becoming permanent.
The fact that ward councillor’s from Gezina and Capital Park have not been informed of the City’s intentions, or involved in any preparatory discussions, is a serious concern.
