The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Tshwane Metro backs the position taken by city manager Johann Mettler against the so-called Rooiwal Five. These officials were implicated in awarding the rigged tender for the upgrade of the city’s biggest wastewater treatment plant.

In comments reported by today’s Sunday Times, Mettler rejected the idea that disciplinary action against these officials will be dropped in favour of allowing them to return to work.

Mettler also stated the obvious, namely that their employment relationship with the city has broken down irretrievably.

We understand that Mettler has been under pressure from factions inside Tshwane’s ANC-led coalition to bring the Rooiwal Five back to work.

Nothing would be worse for a culture of accountability in Tshwane and the prospect of delivering value for taxpayers money, including to the residents of Hammanskraal.

The DA will monitor the situation in Tshwane and act against any attempt to unduly influence the decisions of the city manager. This is the type of unaccountable behaviour voters can vote out in November, by registering to vote now.
