The Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng will hand over a petition to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) demanding that the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) prioritises the construction of a primary school in Block KK, Soshanguve, Tshwane.

The residents have been waiting for thirty years for a school to be built in the area. Children are forced to go to school under dangerous conditions. The nearest primary school for learners to attend is in Block P, and they need to cross a river, which is risky. A bridge was supposed to be built to make it safer for learners to get to school, but this has still not materialised.

The Gauteng Department of Education has identified a site for a school in the area, yet no construction has taken place.

This is one of the many failures of Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s government. In his State of the Province Addresses, he promised to build new schools in the province, but to date, only 12 brick-and-mortar schools have been built over the last five years.

The DA Gauteng is the only party with a plan to ensure that all learners can go to school safely and be taught in a conducive environment. A DA-led Gauteng provincial government would construct, upgrade, and maintain the existing schools in the province.

We would implement a rapid construction programme such as the one in the Western Cape, so that our learners have access to schools in their communities.
