The Democratic Alliance is appalled by the latest report that Mr Hangwani Maumela bought a R52 million Italian hypercar shortly after murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran flagged his fake companies that got scores of Tembisa Hospital contracts.
According to the SIU, Maumela is the kingpin of the largest syndicate that siphoned off R816 million from the fraudulent contracts.
The Pagani Huayra Roadster is hand built in Italy and was part of his R208 million fleet of designer vehicles he bought over a two-year period.
It shows the depth of Maumela’s depravity that he bought one of the world’s most expensive cars while stealing money from poor hospital patients.
R52 million could buy 4 desperately needed CT scanners, fund 70 doctors or 140 nurses for a year, or build a new clinic.
The SIU needs to speed up the process whereby they can legally sell all Maumela’s assets and return the money to the Gauteng Health Department.
The DA in Gauteng urges the NPA to file criminal charges against Maumela based on the evidence used for the asset forfeitures. There is no need to wait for the final SIU report which is the usual delaying tactic when people have high level political connections.
It is noteworthy that Maumela has a reported association with Bejani Chauke, who is close to President Cyril Ramaphosa, and he is the cousin of Andile Ramaphosa, the President’s son from his first marriage.
The DA will be holding the NPA to account in Parliament and elsewhere to expedite criminal charges against all those implicated in the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital heist.
