The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the news that the Petition to Rescue Daveyton’s train station will be heard by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
In June of this year, the DA tabled a petition on behalf of the residents of Daveyton to the committee.
The petition outlines key steps that are necessary to ensure the restoration of Daveyton’s train station.
In early September of this year, the area surrounding the Train Station turned into a crime scene when 5 Gauteng Crime Wardens were attacked during their patrol. This highlights the fact that as the station deteriorates, the surroundings become more dangerous, putting the safety of residents at risk.
The continued delays and broken promises by the ANC’s Minister of Transport have only made the situation worse. Without a functioning train station, the people of Daveyton will remain locked in poverty without economic opportunities to escape it. Their lives will continue to get worse as they struggle to find work and put food on the table for their families.
This is why the DA calls on the Portfolio Committee to act with haste by agreeing to the demands in our petition:
• Conduct an oversight visit to the station within the next 3 months to ascertain the scope of the challenges facing the station and to determine what will be required to make it functional again;
• Consider allocating funding to restore the railway network and connect Daveyton to JHB, Springs, and Benoni within a specified timeframe; and
• Consider allocating funding to restoring the Daveyton train station, developing a long-term maintenance plan, and putting in place measures to secure it from vandals within a specified timeframe.
The people of Daveyton and Etwatwa are tired of the ANC’s promises to fix the things it had a hand in breaking. The DA will remain on the side of citizens, who deserve to have affordable access to transport and economic opportunity.
