Despite manifold failures at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital, the Gauteng Health Department considers hospital CEO Gladys Bogoshi is well-performing.
This is according to Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.
She says that Bogoshi has a performance contract, and last year she scored 4 out of 5 for improved patient’s experience and improved clinical services and patient safety. She was also rated at 3 out of 5 for governance and leadership.
Bogoshi has headed the hospital since February 2013, but there has been no accountability for numerous crises, including the devastating fire in April 2021, and the slow recovery of services.
Last month, patients suffered without hot water and proper food. There are also critical staff vacancies, and frequent shortages of clean linen.
Doctors and nurses complain that Bogoshi does not listen to them and communicates poorly during crises.
She is handsomely paid for her job, earning R1.96 million a year.
I do not believe the department’s assessment of her performance is accurate. She needs to be replaced with a top-class executive to bring real positive change to this flagship hospital.
The DA will be running a poll on social media to ascertain the real opinion of patients and staff on her performance.
A DA-led administration would appoint fit-for-purpose hospital CEOs with rigorous annual assessments to ensure that patients get the best quality treatment with available resources.
