The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng congratulates Jack Bloom MPL, on his graduation last night with a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

His doctoral thesis is entitled “Politics and Religion in the Rise and Fall of the Hasmonean Dynasty.”

See photo here and here.

The other degrees he holds are a BA Honours in Psychology and an MBA from Wits University.

Dr Bloom is the longest-serving member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL). He was first elected in 1994 and has been a Chief Whip and Leader of the Official Opposition.

He is best known as the DA’s Shadow MEC for Health, championing better treatment in hospitals and exposing corruption and scandals. These include the Life Esidimeni tragedy involving the deaths of mental health patients and the shocking murder of whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, who exposed dubious contracts at Tembisa Hospital.

This achievement by Dr Bloom shows that it is never too late to further your studies. We are proud of this outstanding achievement and his contributions to the Gauteng health sector, for the benefit of its residents and the party.
