Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) handed over new whistleblower information to the South African Police Service (SAPS) to strengthen the criminal case against former Ekurhuleni City Manager, Imogen Mashazi.
This follows a series of serious allegations that have already emerged through investigative journalism, testimony before the Madlanga Commission, and previous criminal complaints. These include allegations relating to the luxury private jet trip to London, procurement irregularities, interference in municipal disciplinary processes, unexplained wealth, and findings by the Madlanga Commission that identified prima facie evidence warranting further criminal investigation.
Today, however, our focus is on new information that has come into our possession.
We have been approached by a whistleblower with information that raises serious concerns and, in our view, warrants urgent investigation by SAPS.
According to the whistleblower, Ms Mashazi is allegedly linked to two luxury properties in Meyersdal Eco Estate, with a combined estimated value of around R60 million. The whistleblower further alleges that neither property is registered in the name of Ms Mashazi or her husband, and that she allegedly pays approximately R120 000 per month to another individual to hold the properties on her behalf.
We are in possession of more information, that has now been submitted to SAPS for further investigation.
We have not presented these allegations as proven fact. We have handed this information to SAPS because we believe it is credible, relevant, and should form part of the ongoing criminal investigation into Ms Mashazi’s affairs.
We call on investigators to establish the true ownership and provenance of these assets, determine whether any assets have been concealed, and investigate whether they are consistent with her known lawful income.
If these allegations are found to be true, they would point to a pattern of concealed wealth that goes far beyond what has already been placed before the public.
While residents continue to endure failing roads, water leaks, electricity outages, and deteriorating municipal services, allegations of this scale demand thorough and independent investigation.
We will continue to support law enforcement, protect whistleblowers, and pursue every lawful avenue to ensure that those who abuse public office are held accountable.
No one is above the law, and every allegation of corruption must be fully investigated.
