Yesterday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) conducted an oversight visit of the 30 toilet structures that the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and the Emfuleni Local Municipality controversially erected in 2024. We will be reporting this seemingly corrupt construction project to law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are held to account.

Each toilet came at a cost of R815 000, with a total expenditure of over R24 million.

However, today’s oversight revealed that the toilets are in a state of disrepair, despite the exorbitant amount spent on them.

This raises questions on whether the money meant for toilets, was misappropriated. It is clear that the levels of corruption and financial mismanagement within this ANC-led municipality has reached mind-boggling levels.

Residents of Emfuleni are struggling with basic service delivery yet the ANC-led government consistently chooses to prioritise the looting of resources that are intended to improve the quality of life of the community.

Even in the midst of service delivery challenges, such as a lack of reliable infrastructure, the government has chosen to potentially steal R24 million under the misleading pretext of bringing services to residents. This shows the blatant lack of care they have towards the residents of Emfuleni.

The DA will continue to fight for the residents of Emfuleni to secure service delivery that is sustainable and sufficient as well as in the best interest of those we serve.
