The Democratic Alliance (DA) has uncovered that Emfuleni Local Municipality spent approximately R112 million on refuse collection, without refuse being collected.

Of this amount, R68 million was paid to service providers contracted by the municipality, R31 million went towards employee overtime, and R13 million was spent on fleet rentals.

Despite these millions being spent, residents are still being forced to live in filthy conditions that pose serious health risks.

Our suburbs, CBDs, and townships remain buried under piles of uncollected refuse, while illegal dumping sites continue to spiral out of control.

Emfuleni residents are being financially abused. There is absolutely no value for money spending R112,000,000 on the non-collection of waste. The DA must now question whether procurement processes were properly followed, and whether mismanagement or corruption may be at the heart of the municipality’s ongoing refuse crisis.

Filth covered streets are a direct insult to the residents of Emfuleni.

Under a DA-led government, Emfuleni’s refuse would be collected consistently and sustainably in collaboration with the community, ensuring that residents are no longer inconvenienced by waste collection failures.

The DA will continue to fight for permanent and lasting solutions to be implemented regarding refuse collection.
