The Democratic Alliance (DA) conducted an oversight visit at the decrepit Witkop Blockhouse. The purpose of the oversight was to encourage professional and ethical management of the heritage site.
We were shocked at the dilapidated state of the heritage sight as the monument is falling to pieces from neglect by the municipality. It is crumbling from structural damages and marred by vandalism.
We demand that the Gauteng Department of Tourism and the Sedibeng District Municipality invest in restoring this monument and preserving the rich history that it captures.
This heritage site also boosts tourism and local economies as it attracts visitors and supports local businesses.
The DA will continue to fight to protect cultural and historical assets and safeguard national heritage while reviving economic benefits for the surrounding community.
