During the recent council meeting of Mogale City, the Democratic Alliance (DA), in keeping Mogale’s community first, proposed a performance appraisal system for politicians.
The proposal was made during the item regarding an increase in councillors’ salaries.
Only the DA objected to an increase in councillor salaries.
We opposed simply accepting these increases and instead proposed that the savings from the lower-than-budget increase should instead be redirected to service delivery and the consideration of a community grant to assist vulnerable households.
The 2025/2026 budget made allowance for a 4.3% salary increase for councillors; however, the upper limits increase is approximately 2.4%. The difference of 1.9% has been motivated by the DA to be redirected to service delivery, as well as consideration to create discretionary community grants to assist vulnerable households.
We aim to hold politicians accountable, and recommended a performance appraisal system for councillors to be crafted and implemented.
This would measure accessibility, availability and attention to service delivery.
The robust accountability of the DA has yielded the commitment from the ANC Executive Mayor that these proposals will be considered during the adjustment budget in February 2026.
The reality is that the current ANC-EFF executive lacks the necessary proactive strategies which are needed for responsive, dedicated and accountable government.
Only DA will continue to prioritise community needs over political benefits as we consider fiscal responsibility and accountability.
