The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane is deeply alarmed by the ongoing water crisis in Ekangala, where residents have once again been left without access to clean, running water and are made reliant on water tankers.
DA PR Councillor for the area, Martin Madileng, has been at the forefront of this issue, engaging directly with the Department of Water Affairs and the Regional Head to demand urgent intervention and lasting solutions.
The Department has since responded, citing water turbidity caused by recent rainfall and confirming that production at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant has been temporarily reduced. They further indicated that a new unit will address the issues raised and oversee the plant’s refurbishment plans.
While this feedback offers some clarity, it fails to address critical questions about long-term water infrastructure maintenance and emergency preparedness.
The DA demands full transparency and detailed answers to the following:
- What plans are in place to manage water turbidity during heavy rainfall months?
- What is the current state of the treatment infrastructure, and when will upgrades take place?
- How is the Department communicating with residents during such crises?
- What measures are being implemented to ensure a safe water supply during and after rainfall?
- What long-term strategies exist to strengthen water supply resilience in Ekangala?
The DA will continue to monitor this situation closely and hold the Department accountable until a sustainable solution is implemented, while keeping the residents abreast of any updates coming from the Department. We are committed to ensuring that the residents of Ekangala receive the reliable water service they deserve.
