Tshwane Mayor’s R270k repayment saga continues

After public pressure from the Democratic Alliance (DA), Nasiphi Moya, Mayor of the city of Tshwane, last week admitted that she owes the City R270 000 after she received a salary overpayment when she was in the City’s employ in 2019.

The DA approached the media after Moya avoided official council questions in this regard since January 2026.

After being exposed, Moya confirmed in a letter to the DA that she does in fact owe the City of Tshwane R270 000 since 2019 and that she has now finally taken responsibility for this a debt and authorized a monthly repayment to the City of Tshwane.

However, on Thursday (4th of September) last week City Manager, Johan Mettler, explained to a parliamentary committee that there is an offer to settle in this regard, but this still needed to be submitted to the finance department. Mettler’s answer indicated that there is in fact no confirmed payment arrangement in place, and that Moya has misrepresented herself in her letter to the DA and subsequently mislead the public by saying monthly repayments have been authorised.

The DA has officially written to Moya to confirm the details of her payment arrangement and we are now calling publicly on the Mayor to tell the public what the amount of her monthly repayment will be and when the first payment will be made.

The residents of Tshwane deserve transparency, a Mayor that speaks the truth and takes the responsibility of the public purse seriously.
