The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has brought an urgent motion to Council to suspend Ekurhuleni’s Acting Head of Department for Community Safety, Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi following the damning allegations made by KwaZulu Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The DA has repeatedly demanded that this failing ANC-EFF-ActionSA coalition act against Julius Mkhwanazi, not only for his alleged links to criminal Vusimuzi Matlala and his infiltration of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), but also as he is the subject of a damning Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Instead of alarm bells ringing and action being taken, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Ald. Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has sung Julius Mkhwanazi’s praises, and many believe that he is anointed to take over the role of Chief of Police.
It cannot be the case that a person who is alleged to be deeply rooted in corruption, and various other criminal acts, is rewarded with more power to further entrench criminality within the EMPD.
The DA will not sit by as this failing coalition refuses to act.
Honest, hardworking EMPD officers deserve no less than ethical and honest leadership. Residents deserve a law-abiding, crime free, EMPD.
