The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg is deeply disturbed by the blatant desecration of graves being allowed by Joburg City Parks and Zoo.

One example of this is the Arnolds family’s experience; they discovered a stranger’s tombstone on their late father’s grave, buried in 2012, at Klipspruit Cemetery in Eldorado Park.

The DA calls on Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), as the custodian of Johannesburg’s cemeteries to immediately:

  1. Launch a full, transparent investigation into the Arnolds family’s case and any similar incidents at Klipspruit Cemetery.
  2. Engage urgently, directly and compassionately with the affected family, offering necessary forensic processes such as exhumation and verification conducted with dignity and in line with legal and ethical standards.
  3. Provide mandatory sensitivity training for all cemetery and related staff on interacting with bereaved families, focusing on empathy, cultural awareness, and respectful communication.

Additionally, the family is questioning the circumstances surrounding the burial of their mother in June, after she was buried in a shallow grave.

We extend our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Arnolds families during this difficult time.

This family entrusted their loved ones’ final resting places to the City, and they were traumatised twice. This is unacceptable. The Arnolds’ deserve transparency, compassion, and action.

In moments of grief, families should not endure further anguish. We urge JCPZ to act swiftly to ensure the Arnolds family and all Johannesburg families can trust that their loved ones are laid to rest with honour.
