The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg notes today’s developments in the Jayden-Lee Meek murder trial with sadness and concern. We are deeply distressed by reports that the child’s mother has been implicated in the ongoing investigation.

Florida’s community has long suffered under the weight of unchecked crime and deep-rooted social challenges. An under-resourced South African Police Service (SAPS) station has further compounded the area’s vulnerability.

No words can adequately capture the pain of losing a child. As this devastating case unfolds, we can only imagine the anguish faced by the family and those close to Jayden-Lee. The broader issue of child abuse and domestic violence continues to go unaddressed across South Africa. This tragedy must serve as a wake-up call to all levels of government.

Support and protection services must urgently be made available to the community and the family during this time. All spheres of government must act together to ensure that justice is pursued and that such crimes are not allowed to continue in silence or inaction.

The DA calls for the swift identification and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous crime. Justice for Jayden-Lee must be delivered, and it must be delivered without delay.
