Earlier today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg, led by Caucus Leader, Cllr Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, alongside DA Provincial Leader, Solly Msimanga MPL, delivered a sobering and honest True State of the City Address. The address highlighted the real challenges the City faces and, offered applicable and practical solutions.
In contrast to the same-old script of the ANC-led administration, the DA’s address emphasised the lived experience of Joburg residents – crumbling infrastructure, unreliable service delivery and misplaced priorities. From potholes and hijacked buildings to increasing water and electricity outages, it is clear that the once renowned Johannesburg is in distress.
Even across opposition benches, the DA remains committed to upholding values of good governance, economic growth and accountability. Whilst the current administration focuses on vanity projects and insignificant symbolic gestures, the DA offers feasible alternatives that will take the City forward and efficiently by maximising City owned assets for infrastructure upgrades in its pursuit of service delivery and sustainable growth.
Key proposals include directing funds to repair roads, upgrading water and electricity infrastructure and providing much needed relief to residents through zero-increase on property rates and freezing tariff hikes. The True State of the City Address was not a mere criticism but a blueprint for action. The DA will continue fighting for a Johannesburg that serves and prioritises people.
