On the 26th February 2025, the ANC Executive Mayor Cllr Lucky Sele tabled the adjustment budget for the remainder of 2024/2025 financial year. An additional R33 million was added to the rental of chemical toilets, bringing the total yearly expenditure to R63.6 million.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mogale then argued that for long term sustainability, cost effectiveness and enhancing dignity, that money should rather be used for piped potable proper flush toilet systems instead.

The formalisation of informal settlements programme spurred on by the DA in 2022 was halted by the ANC and EFF who choose to prioritise tenderpreneurs’ profits over people’s health, safety and dignity.

We demand that these chemical toilets be serviced and cleaned immediately.

The EFF and ANC ignored our proposal in council and chose to inflate the contracted services for the chemical toilets, and the cleaning and drainage thereof while approving the additional allocation to contractors.

Clearly, the EFF and ANC in Mogale City, and across Gauteng have an interest in maintaining contractor relationships.

Fast forward to 19th May 2025, ANC & EFF has devasted human dignity by failing to ensure that those chemical toilets are adequately cleaned.

As can be seen in the attached images, the ANC and EFF have failed basic service delivery, and have ignored the constitutional rights of Mogale’s residents. Since the DA started reporting the issue, and bringing the plight of residents to the fore, we have been informed that there are plans underway to clean up this area.

We will not rest until Mogale’s residents most basic needs are met.
