Today, Thursday, 22 August 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Kingsol Chabalala MPL, along with the DA Shadow MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Lyrics Mazibuko, DA PR Councillor in Joburg Central, Cllr Alex Christians, representatives from the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Flo Bird and Wynard Dreyer, and Johannesburg Crisis Committee member Zarina Motali, will conduct an oversight visit at the Johannesburg City Library, following its closure four years ago.

The library building was closed in March 2020 due to the commencement of a planned refurbishment project to address roof leaks, non-complaint fire safety systems, and electrical, mechanical, and wet services.

The estimated cost of the project is R45 456 373,73 excluding VAT. The City of Johannesburg has spent about R21 412 489,10 in total since the refurbishment project started on 24 May 2021.

The DA will access the work done so far and ascertain why there have been delays in completing the project.

This continued closure of the metro’s main public library is concerning as it denies residents access to this valuable facility.

The media is invited to attend and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 22 August 2024
