The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng would like to congratulate the City of Tshwane and Midvaal Local Municipality for their performance in the 2022/2023 Auditor General of South Africa’s (AGSA) Consolidated General Report on Local Government Audit Outcomes.
The City of Tshwane improved its financial audit outcome from an adverse opinion in the 2021/2022 financial year to a qualified opinion in the 2022/2023 financial year by implementing prior-year audit recommendation. This is commendable because for far too long, the residents of Tshwane were deprived of quality service delivery due to poor actions to address transgressions and expenditures. These results provide strong evidence for Mayor Cilliers Brink remaining the Mayor of the City of Tshwane for the benefit of the residents.
The report further reveals that the Midvaal Local Municipality is the only municipality that maintained its clean audit status in Gauteng. Midvaal has achieved a remarkable milestone by maintaining a clean audit record for an impressive 10 years in a row, showcasing an exemplary commitment to financial integrity and accountability.
The audit outcomes of the multi-party led Tshwane and DA-run Midvaal demonstrate that local governments can operate effectively and provide excellent service to their residents when proper financial controls are in place and dedicated leaders are appointed.
The ANC-led coalition municipalities like Emfuleni and Sedibeng should learn from their counterparts about best practices for effectively managing the municipality’s finances. This will help them improve their current dire situation.
A DA government will rescue Gauteng municipalities from the corruption and mismanagement that has led to a decaying environment.
