Puppet Mayor out, EFF Speaker in – Only fresh elections can save Ekurhuleni

Issued by Ald Tania Campbell – DA Leader in the City of Ekurhuleni

Today, the EFF puppet mayor of Ekurhuleni, Ald Sivuyile Ngodwana, has been removed by a Motion of No Confidence (MoNC) and the MoNC against the EFF Speaker of Council failed.

While the mayor has been removed, the DA remained steadfast on our amendment to ActionSA’s MoNC, calling for council to be dissolved and having fresh elections for residents to vote for a renewed mandate.

However and unfortunately for the residents of this city, our amendment was ignored.

We strongly believe fresh elections have never been more important to save the City of Ekurhuleni, as we have now witnessed the third Motion of No Confidence in an Executive Mayor in under three years.

The fact is, the unabated collapse of service delivery under the watch of the ANC/EFF coalition, coupled with prolonged water outages, failing electrical infrastructure and the dysfunctionality of council has become the norm of the day and it is the residents who suffer.

We believe no number of Motions of no-confidence can salvage what is left of the failing municipality and the city cannot afford to be governed by another ‘puppet mayor’. What is needed is fresh elections with a renewed mandate from the voters across the city.

We continue to serve the residents and fight to rescue Ekurhuleni.
