Motorists who use Beyers Naude Drive have to wait even longer for the upgrades to the road to be completed. This is because the contractor has abandoned the project despite being paid R200 million.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been reliably informed that the contractor that was appointed by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Logistics has not yet paid the subcontractor for the work done.
The upgrade to this road is meant to alleviate the current traffic congestion and fix the potholes on this road.
It appears to be a recurring problem where contractors are appointed and are unable to complete the work that is needed.
The DA will be tabling questions to the MEC for Roads and Logistics to determine how the initial contractor was appointed. In addition, we will also ask the MEC about the measures that are being put in place to ensure that only contractors who are capable of doing the work are appointed.
It is high time that the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) ensures that competent contractors are appointed. If it is found that they are unable to complete the work, the contractor should be barred from doing business with the government in the future.
A DA government will ensure that all contractors who are appointed to do work for the government are properly vetted.
